The Vatican is preparing to submit a film for Oscar consideration for the first time in the nearly 100-year history of the Academy Awards.
The short documentary “Green Lava,” which features a young Italian man living with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy, is set to premiere in Los Angeles this week. The project is being positioned as an inspirational Vatican-produced work.
If accepted, the submission would mark a historic moment for the Academy and for the Vatican’s involvement in cinema. Details on the formal entry process and category are expected to follow the premiere.
The news has already drawn attention across both entertainment and religious media outlets.
