Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother, the new action-drama from writer-director Bassam Tariq, emerged as one of the strongest critical favorites at the 2026 Toronto International Film Festival.

Mahershala Ali stars as Latif, a devout Muslim hitman who lives by a strict moral code: he only kills bad guys and never uses a gun. When his wife suddenly dies, Latif is forced to become a single father to three young children while his violent past closes in on the family in Houston. The film balances intense, stylish action sequences with intimate moments of grief, faith, and fatherhood.
Why the Strange Title?
The title comes from a well-known Islamic hadith in which the Prophet Muhammad is asked three times who a person should honor most after God, and each time answers, “Your mother.” The film uses this idea as both spiritual grounding and emotional core as Latif grapples with the weight of his profession, the loss of his wife, and the responsibility of raising his kids alone.

Critical Reception at TIFF
Early reviews have been highly positive. Critics have praised Ali’s performance as one of the strongest of his career, Tariq’s ability to blend visceral action with meditative drama, the gorgeous cinematography, and the film’s unique perspective on a Muslim action hero who refuses easy stereotypes. Several outlets called it one of the best films of TIFF 2026 so far, with some noting it feels more interesting than many recent superhero projects.
Interestingly, Ali has said that combat and sword training he did for Marvel’s cancelled Blade project ended up helping prepare him for this role — a bit of Hollywood irony that has added to the online conversation.
Release Date
Amazon MGM Studios / Orion is planning a limited theatrical release beginning September 25, 2026, with wider availability to follow. Search interest in the unusually long title, “Mahershala Ali new movie,” and related terms continues to rise as festival buzz spreads.
