Stephen Root Confirms GTA 6 Role as Brian Heder: King of the Hill Voice Actor Speaks Out

Character actor Stephen Root has officially confirmed what fans suspected for months: he is voicing Brian Heder in Rockstar Games’ highly anticipated Grand Theft Auto VI.

Stephen Root confirms GTA 6 role as Brian Heder King of the Hill voice actor

Speaking at the BAFTA TV Tea Party, Root told AP News, “You’re gonna see me in there.” He added that many people recognized his distinctive voice from the second GTA 6 trailer because of his long-running work on the animated series King of the Hill.

Who Is Brian Heder in GTA 6?

Brian Heder is described by Rockstar as a classic drug runner from the golden age of smuggling in the Leonida Keys (the game’s version of the Florida Keys). He still moves product through his boat yard with his third wife, Lori, and has been around long enough to let others do the dirty work. He serves as something of a mentor and landlord figure to one of the protagonists, Jason.

Root noted that his character appeared in early GTA 6 promotional material nearly a year ago, and fans immediately connected the voice to his iconic performances.

Why Fans Recognized Him Instantly

Stephen Root has voiced Bill Dauterive (and Buck Strickland) on King of the Hill since 1997, including the ongoing Hulu revival. That unmistakable Southern drawl and world-weary delivery made the link to Brian Heder almost immediate once the trailer dropped. Searches for “stephen root king of the hill,” “bill dauterive,” and “stephen root gta 6” exploded after the confirmation.

Root is also famous for playing the stapler-obsessed Milton Waddams in the 1999 cult comedy Office Space, which is why “milton office space” and “stephen root office space” are trending alongside the GTA news.

Widow’s Bay Emmy Nod

At the same time, Root is earning awards attention for his role as Wyck Crawford in the Apple TV comedy-horror series Widow’s Bay, opposite Matthew Rhys and Dale Dickey. The show has received multiple Emmy nominations, including one for Root in a supporting category. That dual spotlight — classic voice work meeting a major new video game role — is driving the current search surge.

GTA 6 Release Context

According to Root, the latest information he has puts the release around November 19. Rockstar has not issued a new official statement tied to this confirmation, but the actor’s comments mark the first time a major cast member has publicly acknowledged their involvement in the game.

For fans of Root’s work across King of the Hill, Office Space, Barry, and now Widow’s Bay and GTA 6, it’s another reminder of how consistently the veteran character actor delivers memorable performances — whether on screen or behind the microphone.
